CLASSES & WORKSHOPS with PAT ARCHIBALD
On this web page you will find details about the current Studio Programme. (Please note that as I have recently moved my classes are now held in Edinburgh), some classes are held in the studio and some are held at St. Brides Centre, 10 Orwell Terrace, Edinburgh. Further on you will find information about Away-Days (classes that are suitable to teach away from the studio to groups of keen patchworkers and quilters).
The Studio Class Programme
Most classes are run on a day-a-month basis. This suits students that have to fit in a hectic work and home schedule and allows time for 'homework' and/or research between classes. If classes are oversubscribed then additional classes can be scheduled for another time. The timetabling of classes also allows for individual/small group tuition. Please email me for more information about any of the above.
The following are a selection of classes for 2008. More will be added to the programme as the Studio establishes itself.

Away-Day Workshops and Talks
(for teaching away from the Studio)
I am delighted to travel to teach all over the UK. The list of workshop topics below includes the traditional as well as more 'inspirational' subjects.
Day workshops usually last from 10am-4pm. See below for fees and travel costs.
Travellers’
Tales Told in Little Landscapes/Atmospheric Strata
Conjure up the atmosphere
and capture memories of special places by creating strata of fabric layers.
With the strata in place, superimpose a tiny, pictorial glimpse or detail of
the scene. Hand embellish with embroidery and beads. These pieces are A4 sized,
achievable and manageable. Kits can be supplied for this workshop containing
everything you require to finish the project.
Miniature
Landscapes (Foundation Pieced)
Choosing from the
soft colours of the Highlands of Scotland or the burning colours of the heat
of the African sun, foundation piece a miniature landscape. Working from a kit
and a formula make a prototype to convey the atmosphere of your chosen country.
Gilded
Velvets and Sheers
Transform velvets and sheers into unique fabrics and then gild with metallic
foils. The small samples can be stitched into heirloom evening bags or showcased
in the centre of a cushion. Kits can be supplied for this workshop containing
everything you require to finish at least two experimental panels.
Sunset
Colours
Explore colour in a more dynamic way using your sunset photographs. Learn how
to add a touch of pizzazz into your work to create an abstract piece full of
atmosphere and colourful energy.
Celtic Connections
Create a background based on traditional plaids and interlace metallic Celtic
motifs to give a very contemporary twist to these age old designs. Can be hand
or machine stitched. Kits can be supplied for this workshop containing everything
necessary to complete an A3 sized project.
Butterflies
and Batiks
Using stained glass
techniques and iron-on rainbow shaded bias, make a variety of butterfly and
dragonfly blocks to feed off a twisted vine. The finished panel measures approximately
26” x 35”. This design is suitable for everyone with basic rotary
cutting and machining skills. Tips on
machine appliqué are covered in the day along with hand techniques.
TALK
A
Creative Journey to the Roof of Africa
The story in words, slides and quilts of my inspirational climb to the top of
Kilimanjaro and the resulting award winning quilt 'From Addis to Kili : From
Dawn to Dusk'.
Meaningful
Colour
Take a look at the history, traditions, cultures and personalities associated
with each colour and learn how we can use this information to harness the energy
of colour to produce unique quilts.
