CLASSES & WORKSHOPS with PAT ARCHIBALD
On this web page you will find details about the current Studio Programme. Classes and workshops are held in my new studio space at WASPS, 2/3 West Park Place, Dalry, Edinburgh, EH11 2DP. Further on you will find information about Away-Days (classes that are suitable to teach away from the studio to groups of keen patchworkers and quilters).
The Studio Class Programme
I have a weekly class on Thursday mornings and classes that are run on a day-a-month basis and day workshops. These monthly and 'one off' workshops suit students that have to fit in a hectic work and home schedule and allows time for 'homework' and/or research between classes. If classes are oversubscribed then additional classes can be scheduled for another time. The timetabling of classes also allows for individual/small group tuition. Please email me for more information about any of the above.
The following are a selection of classes for 2009. More will be added to the programme as the Studio establishes itself.
To book a class please phone Pat first (07773 268135) to register an interest and then download the booking form - see below.

Away-Day Workshops and Talks
(for teaching away from the Studio)
I am delighted to travel to teach all over the UK and abroad. The list of workshop topics below includes the traditional as well as more 'inspirational' subjects.
Day workshops usually last from 10am-4pm. See below for fees and travel costs.
Travellers’
Tales Told in Little Landscapes
Conjure up the atmosphere
and capture memories of special places by creating strata of fabric layers.
With the strata in place, superimpose a tiny, pictorial glimpse or detail of
the scene. Hand embellish with embroidery and beads. These pieces are A4 sized,
achievable and manageable. Kits can be supplied for this workshop containing
everything you require to finish the project.
Miniature
Landscapes (Foundation Pieced)
Choosing from the
soft colours of the Highlands of Scotland or the burning colours of the heat
of the African sun, foundation piece a miniature landscape. Working from a kit
and a formula make a prototype to convey the atmosphere of your chosen country.
City
Angels
Use a simple technique of layering thread snippets between velvets and sheers
to create an atmospheric city skyline with a golden angel hovering in the night
sky. Techniques include bonding, foiling, cut-back appliqué and quilting.
A kit can be supplied for this class.
Ghost
images of the Orient
Create a background with a curved seam using Lynne Edwards new Wavy Border Ruler
and then learn in easy stages how to create ghostly images using layers of nets
and sheers. We will also discuss how to do more complicated ‘ghosts’.
The
Seasons
Create a simple background with an asymmetrical border and superimpose gilded
motifs relating to your chosen season. Finish by adding strips of narrow rainbow
coloured bias to the border to give a contemporary twist to the finished design.
Can be hand or machine stitched. Techniques include foiling fabric and various
ways of applying the bias. Kits can be supplied for this workshop containing
everything necessary to complete a small panel.
Sunset
Colours
Explore colour in a more dynamic way using your sunset photographs. Learn how
to add a touch of pizzazz into your work to create an abstract piece full of
atmosphere and colourful energy.
Celtic Connections
Experiment with foiling by superimposing a variety of gold, silver or copper
Celtic motifs onto a ‘woven’ background to produce a small piece
with a contemporary twist. This project can be done by hand or machine. A kit
can be supplied for this class.
Auspicious Symbols
Using the format of a long, narrow Chinese scroll we will create a montage of
a city skyline using Bondaweb and then stitch your choice of auspicious symbol
high in the sky. We’ll also include some metallic foiling to simulate
reflections in the high rise buildings.
TALKS
A
Creative Journey to the Roof of Africa
The story in words, slides and quilts of my inspirational climb to the top of
Kilimanjaro and the resulting award winning quilt 'From Addis to Kili : From
Dawn to Dusk'.
Meaningful
Colour
Take a look at the history, traditions, cultures and personalities associated
with each colour and learn how we can use this information to harness the energy
of colour to produce unique quilts. This is a PowerPoint presentation.
Around
the World in Eighty Quilts
Travels can be strong influences in your quiltmaking. Come on a creative journey
and learn how I make my colour selections and design decisions to reflect the
quality of the places I visit. This is a PowerPoint presentation.
